Parasite Symptoms


Parasites live in or on another organism, known as the host, from which they receive nourishment and protection. Bodybuilder's Drugs!


Despite the amount of press that steroids and prohormones usually receive you’d think that these were the only two substances that bodybuilders were using. But nothing could be further from the truth. There are dozens if not hundreds of compounds available that modern bodybuilders have at their fingertips to boost their muscle-building abilities and fat loss. The following are some of the more popular drugs that you’ll find in gym bags these days.

Estrogen blockers (i.e. Tamoxifen)

Estrogen blockers are a perfect example of using one drug to reduce the side effects caused by another drug. Even though steroids are relatively safe, they may cause side effects in certain individuals. One of the most unsightly of these is called gynecomastia. Essentially males also have receptors for the female hormone estrogen in their bodies, and one of the highest concentrations is found in the nipple region. As one of the breakdown products of steroids is estrogen, the increased levels of the female hormone can activate the estrogen receptors in the nipple region. The end result is the development of feminine-like breasts. The term “bitch tits” is often used as the growth may actually start to look just like women’s breasts. In most cases the condition will clear up after termination of steroid use, but in some cases the growth will need to be surgically removed.

Although some bodybuilders rely on luck or surgery to deal with gynecomastia, the smart ones turn to estrogen blockers. As the name suggests, estrogen blockers are compounds that block the feminizing effects of estrogen in the male’s body. The exact mechanism of action is unknown but it is believed that the drug binds to estrogen receptors preventing the real hormone from activating the cells.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). Although steroids may accelerate muscular growth, there is one part of the anatomy that they may actually shrink – the testes!

Following the old saying “use it or lose it” steroids often cause the body to shut down it’s own natural production of testosterone. After a period of time the testes begin to atrophy (shrink) because of a lack of use. In most cases they’ll begin remanufacturing testosterone when the steroids are stopped, but depending on the length of the cycle and the individual’s genetics, recovery may take weeks if not months. To combat this bodybuilders have once again turn to pharmacology.

Human chorionic gonadotrophin is a hormone only found in the placenta of pregnant women. It doesn’t seem to play much of a role for women, but for bodybuilders it has one appealing property; it mimics the action of luteinizing hormone (LH) in the body. LH is a pituitary hormone that once released, signals the testes to begin manufacturing testosterone. Hopefully you can now see why HCG would be an important drug for bodybuilders who are coming off long steroid cycles.

Diuretics (i.e. Lasix)

One of the most difficult tasks facing competitive bodybuilders is getting that “shredded” look for competition. But even when they experience significant fat loss and manage to drop their body fat percentages down to two or three percent, there is often a thin layer of water blurring the muscularity, giving that dreaded “smooth” look. Years ago saunas and wearing four layers of clothes were the usual choices for shedding water, but things have “evolved” and as with most things in bodybuilding now days, the solution for many is found in a pill bottle.

Diurectics are drugs that stimulate the body to lose water. Most work by blocking the actions of the water-conserving hormone, aldosterone. The most popular diuretic for shedding water is Lasix which can be taken in pill or injectable forms. Lasix and other diuretcis are very effective for shedding water, but they also cause the body to excrete important substances called electrolytes. These electrrcally-charged ions such as sodium, potassium, and chlorine, play vital roles in modulating various metabolic systems including, muscle contraction, nerve conduction, and heart beat. A number of individuals have died from diuretic overdosing over the years.

Thyroid Drugs (i.e. Cytomel). Compare pictures of competitors today with those from the 1970’s or 1980’s and you’ll see two important differences. First of all today’s contestants are carrying a lot more muscle mass. Bodybuilders are also much more ripped onstage. While steroids and growth hormone have probably contributed the most to the increased muscle size, the lower body fat levels are usually the result of thyroid drugs.

The thyroid gland is located in the middle of the lower neck, just below the larynx (voice box) and slightly above your collarbones. The thyroid gland produces two primary peptide hormones called tetraiodothyronine (thyroxine or T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Both these iodine-containing hormones are essential for life and have many effects on body metabolism, growth, and development.

Bodybuilders refer to the thyroid gland as the body’s “furnace” since one of its primary functions is the regulating of metabolism and temperature. The two primary disorders of the thyroid gland are hypothyroidism (low levels of thyroid hormones) and hyperthyroidism (thyroid hormone levels too high). It’s the drugs that are used to treat hypothyroidism that have become popular.

When levels of T3 and/or T4 are insufficient the body’s metabolism slows down and the individual gains weight, usually in the form of fat. Thyroid drugs such as Cytomel are very effective at reversing this condition. These drugs are used to drop bodyfat percentages to the low single digit range. The big disadvantage of thyroid drugs is that they often leave the individual dependent on them. Once you depress the thyroid’s ability to manufacture its own hormones, they may never return to normal levels. Numerous tales are told of male competitors and female fitness contestants ballooning up after coming off their fat loss thyroid medication. In most cases the only treatment is to go back on the drugs and stay on.

Increase Your Risk of Heart Disease With Lipitor and Pravachol


Results of a new study comparing the effectiveness of Pfizer Inc.,’s Lipitor with Pravachol, made by Bristol-Myers Squibb, was recently published in the New York Times. The study details the clinical observation that Lipitor was significantly more effective than Pravachol in lowering patient’s LDL cholesterol levels. However, the study did not comment on the overall effect that Statin drugs have on patient health, or the research that indicates Statins may actually increase your risk of heart disease and heart attack.

Statin drugs have been proven effective in the reduction of LDL cholesterol in most patients. However, the bio-chemical reactions that the drugs use to decease cholesterol also inhibit the production of an important nutrient that is essential for good heart health; specifically CoQ10.

Lipitor and Pravachol work by inhibiting the body’s ability to make an enzyme called HMG-CoA. This enzyme is the precursor to two compounds, cholesterol and CoQ10. Because the intent of Statin drugs is to inhibit cholesterol production, this method of suppression is very effective in reducing cholesterol levels. However, by suppressing the manufacture of HMG-CoA, and subsequently CoQ10, the body actually becomes more susceptible to heart attack, angina, congestive heart failure, and many other pulmonary-related diseases.

CoQ10 is found in every cell in the body and is necessary for proper energy utilization, resistance to disease, and cardiac health. The compound is so necessary that it’s chemical name is actually ubiquinone, because of its ubiquitous presence in the body. By suppressing the mechanism that makes CoQ10, Statin drugs such as Lipitor and Pravachol put patients at significant risk of heart disease, as well as reduce overall resistance to cancer and other diseases.

CoQ10 is used by the heart and other muscles to facilitate contraction as blood is pumped through the body. If the body’s source of CoQ10, is lowered, either through Statin drugs or environmental factors, the hearts ability to contract is greatly diminished. This subsequently results in significant cardiac complications; including angina, heart disease, cardiac arrhythmia and heart attack.

In addition to its contribution to proper heart function, CoQ10 is also a significant ant-oxidant. When our ability to product CoQ10 is reduced, our body’s immunity to cancer, pollution and disease can be greatly diminished. This has been documented in a number of studies where CoQ10 levels have been measured in people with specific cancers, degenerative diseases, or HIV.

The relation between HMG-CoA, cholesterol, and CoQ10 has been well documented and is freely available. Subsequently, the solution to reduced CoQ10 levels has been made extremely simple. The solution is simply dietary supplementation with CoQ10 if you are taking a Statin drug. Much of the diminished CoQ10 supply can be made up through dietary supplementation. In fact, CoQ10 supplements can be purchased in the supplement section of your local health food store.

CoQ10 is essential to proper heart health and resistance to disease. Statin drugs such as Lipitor and Pravachol inhibit the body’s ability to product CoQ10. If not addressed, this can increase a patient’s risk of heart disease and other cardiac conditions. However, supplementation of CoQ10 by the use of a dietary supplement can balance the effects of Statin drugs and ensure that the patient’s risk of overall heart disease does not increase while his/her cholesterol levels decrease. Common High Blood Pressure Medications - Know These 8 Types


There are eight common medications used to treat high blood pressure. While many people dealing with hypertension will possibly be prescribed a combination of a variety of these medications, the amount of medication needed depends greatly on the type and the level of severity of the illness.

Causes of Vaginal Odor - What Does Abnormal Vaginal Discharge Look ...


Is vaginal odour a popular topic talked about among women aside from men, babies and bingo if you like? It could be, if not for personal pride getting in the way, or that of embarrassment. Because we women differ in many ways, it is not uncommon for some to conceal their problem. If we were to be more open on the matter making it a topical subject, then a lot can be learned from another`s suffering. This may sound sad; however it is fact that by doing this, it can provide relief and give support to those concerned over their vaginal odour. Remember a problem shared is a problem halved.

To put your mind at rest, there are two things you need to remember, one, you are not the only woman with a smelly vagina, and two, "you don't have a smelly vagina" how can this be you may well ask. Well because the vagina is an odourless organ of the body means, any odour from these quarters has to be caused by another source.

To clear up any confusion, let us clarify the reason for giving you the false impression that it is the vagina that smells. Odours do develop in and around the genital area, but only because of causes. Finding the cause should be your number one priority if you are looking to rid the odour. Vaginal odours can be caused by various matters i.e. sweating; not having bathed your private parts properly or the more common motive is that of a vaginal infection.

A vaginal Infection is normally where more than one bacteria, yeast or protozoal organism is found. The vagina usually contains large numbers of organisms called Lactobacillus (or acidophilus). A change in vaginal discharge normally signifies you have a vaginal infection. Noticeable changes can include colour, heavy loss, foul smell and itchiness. Inflammation burning or redness around the vagina is also other regular symptoms connected to an infection.

Normally, vaginal discharge has no smell and causes none of the above symptoms.

Bacterial vaginosis, women suffering from the bacterial vaginosis have a great number of organisms called Gardnerella vaginalis as well as many other organisms. Bacterial vaginosis can cause the vagina to smell and perhaps show an increase in the amount of discharge release. Discharge normally appears loose white or discoloured.

Candida vaginitis Is a yeast infection, and in contrast to bacterial vaginosis may show much larger amounts of thicker white discharge or none at all. Candida vaginitis symptoms include itching, irritation, inflammation or redness.

Trichomonas vaginitis infection often causes a flow of heavy discoloured smelly discharge. Itching can occur but is less likely than with a yeast infection like Candida vaginitis.

When seeking advice or treatment to rid your vaginal odour, it must come from no other than that of your doctor. Symptoms of a vaginal infection can be very similar to many other types of disease or conditions, so it is important for your GP to check you over to eliminate other causes, should they "not" be related to your vaginal odour.

Your doctor can usually make a prognosis in the surgery. Often, just medical background history and clinical presentation is enough for he/she to determine the condition

Treatments for Vaginal Infections will vary due to causes and severity.

Metronidazole (Flagyl, Protostat) is a regular form of treatment normally prescribed for Bacterial vaginosis. Metronidazole is orally taken. Like most other types of medication, side affects are common i.e. vomiting or a dodgy stomach. Other medication like clindamycin (Cleocin) is also taken by mouth. Vaginal creams and gels can be used to ease symptoms of itch and irritation.

A yeast infection is normally treated differently, with creams and suppositories. These are located then into the vagina. Some yeast infection treatments are sold without prescription (miconazole (Monistat) and clotrimazole (Gyne-Lotrimin or Mycelex-G) over the chemist counter.

If you feel embarrassed or afraid over this issue, then there is no need to be, because it is all a natural process of the female body. Top 4 Diabetes Medications


These days, a variety of medicines are available to treat diabetes. When individuals find themselves diagnosed with Type II diabetes, they are generally given one or more of these medications, rather than insulin. Often, multiple drugs are used, rather than just one. The purpose of the medicines is to enable the body to make more insulin on its own, thereby allowing your body to process the blood sugar it needs to eliminate without putting your blood sugar levels out of balance.

Sulfonylureas are one of the most well respected drugs used to treat diabetes. There are several different types of this medication on the market, the most popular being Glucotrol. These drugs work by increasing the amount of insulin released from the pancreas. These medicines work well in lowering blood sugar levels but also run the risk of a person developing hypoglycemia.

Hypoglycemia occurs when your blood sugar level is too low. Because of this potentially dangerous side effect, sulfonylureas are often given with other medicines, most notably Glucophage, or more commonly known as Metformin. This drug works well with Glucotrol as it reduces the amount of blood sugar in the liver while the Glucotrol increases the amount of insulin in the pancreas. Both medications must be taken prior to meals. Most people who are first diagnosed with Type II diabetes are given this combination of medicines which, when taken as directed, are effective at maintaining a healthy blood sugar level.

Another drug that is showing promise in working well with Metformin is Prandin. Prandin also lowers blood sugar levels but at a slower rate than Metformin and has shown good results in studies. Like Glucotrol, Prandin increases the amount of insulin in the body and can also cause hypoglycemia. It is very important for a patient with diabetes to work with their doctor to get the right dosage of each medication and never double a dosage or cut one in half. Prandin cannot be used in women who are pregnant or nursing children.

Many of those with Type II diabetes will find that their doctors prescribe the new medication Starlix to treat their disease. Although Starlix works in a way that's similar to Prandin, people take the same dosage over time, rather than needing to adjust the doses as they would with Prandin. This fact, plus the fact that Starlix does not put the kidneys at risk, make it an extremely popular and promising new option on the diabetes medication market.

While most medicines that treat diabetics increase insulin developed in the pancreas and decrease the sugar in the liver, newer drugs are being marketed that decrease the absorption of carbohydrates in the intestines. Precose did remarkably well in trial studies in breaking down the carbohydrates in the system, making it easier to eliminate. However, this medication has not done as well as the sulfonlureas, which are considered the best possible medicines that treat the disease at this time. However, for those who are allergic to sulfur, Precose is a good option.

A diagnosis of Type II diabetes may be frightening for an individual, but there are many different drugs available that can keep this disease at bay. It is very important, however, for a patient to be totally compliant in order for these medicines to work effectively. It may take increased dosages, lowered dosages or different combinations of medications in order to get the right balance to help you maintain a healthy blood sugar level. This is why it is so important for an individual to carefully monitor their levels throughout the day and keep a record for the physician.

You and your doctor, working together, can normalize your blood sugar levels and control your condition. To play your role in this teamwork, you must monitor your sugar and report the results, in addition to any symptoms you experience, to your doctor regularly. UltraCET: The Dynamic Duo Of Prescription Pain Control Medications


Remember the last time you stubbed your toe? OUCH! It’s painful. But a stubbed toe usually doesn’t send us running to the medicine cabinet, since we know that the pain will pass within a few minutes.

But for more serious “acute” pain (pain that’s severe and constant for a couple of days), waiting it out may not be an option. For some acute pain, we might even make things worse: for example, if you hold a painful joint at an awkward angle to relieve the pain, you might end up with a muscle strain.

So what are our options? Sometimes simple over the counter medications may do the trick. But for when they don’t, a prescription medication may be the best bet.

UltraCET: Two Tough Drugs in one Small Pill

For acute pain from sprains, muscle strains, surgery, or dental work, or for arthritis flare-ups, UltraCET is a terrific option.

UltraCET is like any heroic dynamic duo (think Batman and Robin, or Xena and Gabrielle): One drug has the high-profile effect, but the other has an equally important, though less noticeable set of activities.

The “ultra” part of UltraCET is tramadol, the generic name for Ultram. Tramadol’s effect on your body is similar to the effect of narcotics (drugs like opium and heroin which are illegal, and codeine and morphine, which aren’t). Tramadol is just as good as narcotics in relieving pain but because unlike narcotics, it doesn’t affect your breathing or have other side-effects which stop us from regularly using medical narcotics.

The “CET” part of UltraCET is probably familiar to you in its day-to-day formulation; you might even have it in your medicine cabinet! It’s acetaminophen, the same drug that’s in Tylenol.

The two drugs work together (in “synergy”) to control pain. Acetaminophen helps “increase your threshold to pain.” That’s a fancy way of saying that mild pain signals from your body don’t even make it up to your brain so they don’t register. The bigger pain signals do make it to your brain, but that’s where tramadol kicks in - stopping the pain signals while they’re working their way through your brain. It’s just like Robin capturing the villain’s henchmen while Batman tackles the mastermind villain!

If you’ve just been seen by a doctor (a surgeon, or a dentist), she may well have already prescribed UltraCET for you. If you haven’t, but you’ve got a sprain or regular arthritis flares, you should talk with your doctor about a prescription for this drug.

Some cold sore medications obviously have a better track record than others, but it can be difficult to find the perfect remedy for that annoying and embarrassing cold sore. However, if I don't have any when the tingling begins, or I wake up to find that the blisters have already begun to form, the cold sore will generally run its course, lasting 9-10 days regardless of how much I continue to apply. It really is important to apply Abreva immediately upon feeling any tingling or pain. Even an hour can make a big difference.

Zovirax (Aciclovir):

Let me just say that I absolutely love Zovirax and I regret all the years I suffered with cold sores, spending hours researching home remedies and over-the-counter products, when a simple call to the doctor for a prescription was the answer. It is truly a life-saver when it comes to cold sores. Whether it is applied at the first signs of a cold sore or even after bumps and blisters have begun to form, it will zap my cold sore in 24-48 hours. In addition, it does not "dry out" the cold sores which many medications do; shrinking the blisters, but leaving a very hard scab that cracks and bleeds. Zovirax also has something in it to relieve pain and itching. In most cases, if Zovirax is applied during the tingling stage the cold sore does not develop (like Abreva). If it is applied after blisters have formed, it shrinks the blisters overnight and relieves all the redness and irritation surrounding the sore. I have never had a cold sore for more than three days when using Zovirax. The one down-side to using this medication is the cost. A 5 gram tube of Zovirax retails at about $120.00 and is subject to a higher co-pay with insurance because there is no generic equivalent available yet.

Avandia Side Effects - Diabetes, PPH and Hypoglycemia


First approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1999 to treat type II, or adult onset diabetes, Avandia became one of the most popular drugs for the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline. It works by allowing the body to use insulin it produces to control the levels of blood sugar in the liver and prevent the serious and potentially fatal aspects of this condition that affects almost 16 million adults in the United States.

Unfortunately, Avandia has been linked to a number of serious side effects of its own. From as early as 2003, medical experts at the Mayo Clinic discovered that Avandia was linked to six cases of congestive heart failure in elderly men undergoing treatment for type II diabetes. Additionally, Avandis is linked to hypoglycemia, or the lack of sugar in the blood. Without blood sugar the body cannot function, and can cause a number of extremely dangerous side effects to occur such as accelerated heart rate, headache, sweating, fatigue, weakness, and dizziness.

GlaxoSmithKline, along with the FDA, sent a letter to healthcare professionals in December 2005 to alert them about the possibility of peripheral edema (swelling of the extremities) and macular edema (the buildup of fluid and protein in the eye that can severely impair vision.)
